Experiencing an unplanned pregnancy while you’re a college student can be overwhelming and scary. At Women’s Care Mary’s Center, we are here to offer you free and confidential help. We perform initial pregnancy tests and ultrasounds so you can begin to assess your next options.
Many students wonder if it is even possible to be pregnant and continue college, or feel pressure to have an abortion. Know that abortion is not your only option: every academic semester, an estimated 180,000 women continue their education while pregnant. Women’s Care Mary’s Center is here to help you navigate through your next steps.
Know Your Rights
Title IX is a federal civil rights law that protects pregnant and parenting students from losing education opportunities or being discriminated against. This includes protecting your rights to scholarships, housing, special medical leave, flexible scheduling, and protecting your academic status even if you need to pause your education, leave your sports team or academic group, and more.
Every college has a Title IX coordinator who can help you navigate all the accommodations you may need. They’ll support you by ensuring your professors comply with all accommodations you need, even drastic ones, and make sure you’re aware of all your resources and rights.
Know Your Resources
In addition to knowing your legal rights, it’s also helpful to know your university and local resources. These resources include childcare, extra scholarships, baby pantries, and more. Make an appointment with us and let us know your situation so we can connect you with the best resources.
Take The Next Step
After finding out you may be pregnant, your next step is to have an official pregnancy test and ultrasound. An ultrasound will give you important details about your health:
- Viability of your pregnancy (Early on in pregnancy, miscarriages are more common. To prevent future complications, know whether or not your pregnancy is viable.)
- Gestational age of your pregnancy (How far along you are in your pregnancy will help you determine your pregnancy options.)
- Location of your pregnancy (If your pregnancy is ectopic, you’ll need medical attention right away. An ultrasound will help determine this.)
Let us help you take the next steps at Women’s Care Mary’s Center. Our compassionate nurses, sonographers, and staff are here to care for you, cost-free. Make an appointment today.
